What are the Fry 1000 high-frequency words?

The Fry 1000 list is a collection of the 1,000 most commonly used words in written English, compiled by literacy expert Dr. Edward B. Fry. It’s widely used in early reading instruction to help children build fluency and comprehension.

These words make up about 90% of the words in typical children’s reading material.

Many are sight words (words students are encouraged to recognize instantly, as they are not decodable or are phonetically irregular)

How it differs from Dolch sight words

Best Practices:

Using the Fry high-frequency word lists is not a curriculum unto itself, and would be pedagogically unsound to teach them in isolation or as "sight words."

Many of the words in the Fry lists are actually decodable, meaning they can be sounded out phonetically and follow regular spelling patterns. As such, it is best to focus students on the phonetic patterns in each word, not just memorizing them.

While there are no strict grade-level alignments for each of the 100 word groups, they can be roughly aligned to grade bands.
